Dave's Lock & Key History
Dave's Lock & Key was opened by David South in 1956. The 7th Ave location was one of the first commercial buildings to open in that area of Bozeman in the 1950's. David sold the business in 1986 to Winston & Carole Morrissey, who expanded into the adjoining retail area to increase showroom space and provide more product displays in order to better assist customers. James, the current owner, worked for the Morrissey family when they owned the business and in January of 2014, James and Mary Hanna, purchased the business. Dave's Lock & Key is known locally for quality products, accurately cut keys, and superb customer service.
Meet the crew!
James Hanna (owner)
James was born and raised in southwest Missouri. In his young life he liked to take things apart to see how they worked. Later he helped his grandfather, a few times, change locks on an apartment building and became more interested in how locks worked.
In 1992 James and Mary were married and within 2 months moved from Springfield, Missouri to Bozeman, Montana. James worked for a local business delivering pizzas to the college students and residents while training to become a manager. Mary worked at a local hotel cleaning up after the tourists. Times were tough and so was money so they had to move back to Missouri but it never felt like home.
In February 1999 James opened a locksmith business that served Springfield, Missouri and surrounding communities. He operated out of his home & their Dodge Neon, with James doing all of the lock work and Mary making sure the bills were paid and occasionally answering the phone. They started out as a part-time business and it grew into a full time, 24/7/365 professional locksmith business serving homes & businesses.
Rekeying, lockouts and lock installations were the majority of the services that James performed. People needed a locksmith at any time of the day, even holidays, and James was always there to provide the people with quick, professional service unlike his competitors. Because of this, he acquired many repeat commercial customers which relied on James to keep their investments secure, get them through a broken lock or install new locks at crucial times. This included some access control installations at schools and a few 911 centers.
In 2007 James & Mary moved back to Montana, found a rental house in Manhattan and eventually found a house they purchased in Churchill in 2008. In 2011 they happened to get noticed by the owners of Dave's Lock & Key who hired James as a part time locksmith. He learned many great things from them and was able to purchase the business from them in 2014 so they could retire.
James answers the phones, schedules appointments, assists customers with questions, makes keys, rekeys locks and occasionally does service calls. In his spare time, when he has any, he enjoys woodworking, photography, hiking and mountain biking.
MARY HANNA (owner)
Mary grew up moving from city to city, living in the Northeast as well as the Midwest. She and James met through his uncle and soon fell in love.
James & Mary moved to Bozeman Montana in 1992 but moved back to Southwest Missouri in 1993, hoping one day to move back to Montana to stay. In 2007 she got that opportunity with her husband James when they moved themselves and their business to Manhattan.
Mary has always been the rock that holds them and their business together. Currently she handles the accounting for the business. In her spare time she enjoys reading, surfing the web, spending time with her dog Mocha, hiking and loving her husband.
Tim Johnson (locksmith)
Tim is a seasoned Locksmith starting his career in 1991. He moved to Montana in 2005 and began working for Winston & Carole Morrissey. He stayed on with James & Mary Hanna when they purchased this business in 2014.
He is experienced in all aspects of this industry from rekeying to lock installations to repair to automotive work. Tim's knowledge and experience in Locksmithing is likely one of the best in the valley.
Our customers love Tim. He's outspoken, always happy and you'd know if he was nearby because you could hear him (he talks loudly).
In his free time Tim enjoys golf, bowling, soccer, football and spending time with his family and friends.
Jason McCracken (locksmith)
Jason has learned this industry quickly and is always willing to learn more. He has many years of customer service and sales experience and puts what he knows to good use here.
He enjoys spending time with his fiancé, his dogs, and playing board games.
